Overview

What is Vaultwarden?

Vaultwarden is a lightweight, open-source server that speaks the Bitwarden protocol — so all the official Bitwarden apps, browser extensions and mobile clients work with it out of the box. Written in Rust, it runs comfortably where the official server would need far more resources.

The twist: features Bitwarden sells as premium — TOTP authenticator, emergency access, file attachments, org policies — are simply included when you run Vaultwarden yourself. And the passwords themselves live in a database you control, encrypted end-to-end, instead of in someone else's cloud.

How much does it cost to self-host Vaultwarden?
Free to try — the Free plan is $0 and gives you one project on a livemy.site subdomain. Maker is $10/mo and adds a custom domain, 10 GB and a 99.5% uptime SLA; Pro is $25/mo. Daily backups are a $5/mo add-on — for a password vault they're worth turning on.
Do the official Bitwarden apps work with it?
Yes — that's the point of Vaultwarden. The browser extensions, desktop and mobile apps all connect to your own server URL from their settings. Your vault stays encrypted end-to-end; the server only ever sees ciphertext.
Is it safe to keep passwords on my own server?
Your vault is encrypted on your devices before it reaches the server — whoever runs the server can't read it. Use a strong master password, keep HTTPS on (livemy.app issues SSL automatically) and enable the backups add-on for daily snapshots.
Is self-hosted Vaultwarden hard to maintain?
Not here. The template ships with storage and free SSL already wired up. When a new Vaultwarden version lands you click redeploy in the dashboard — or trigger it over MCP from your AI tool. There's no server to patch and nothing to install on your computer.
